Aluminum oxide, commonly known as bauxite, has the chemical formula Al₂O₃. It is a white powder that is refractory and insoluble in water. Its melting point is 2015 °C, its boiling point is 2980 °C, its relative density is 4.0, and its Mohs hardness is 8.8. It has different crystal forms, mainly two variants, α and γ. Alumina can be obtained by heating and dehydrating aluminum hydroxide. The α-form of aluminum oxide existing in nature is called corundum. Its hardness is second only to that of diamond. A small amount of impurities mixed in can give corundum various colors, and it is called gemstone. For example, ruby (containing a small amount of Cr³⁺) and sapphire (containing Ti³⁺ and Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺). Now, gemstones can be manufactured by the method of artificial crystallization of molten aluminum oxide.
